Updating hardware BIOS serial and boot settings
================================================

Changing hardware serial console or boot settings is done through the
BIOS of the device. Every device model has different steps to enter the
BIOS, but the following examples show how to enter the BIOS and change
device settings in a few common devices. Steps to enter the BIOS for
other devices will likely be very similar.

Lanner FW-7535

Default serial console settings: 115200-8-N-1

BIOS access
++++++++++++

To access the BIOS, press the tab key as soon as the system begins to
boot. The following screen is shown:

To save the settings and quit, use the arrow keys to highlight the Exit
menu, then press enter. Highlight the option "Save Changes and Exit",
then press enter. Select OK, then press enter. The device will reboot.

Changing serial settings
+++++++++++++++++++++++++

To change serial settings, enter the Advanced menu. Select "Remote
Access Configuration". Highlight "Serial Port Mode" and press enter. The
following menu is shown:

Select the preferred option and press enter. To return to the Advanced
menu, press escape.

Changing boot options
++++++++++++++++++++++

To enable PXE network booting, enter the Advanced menu. Change the "Lan
1 boot" option to enabled. Save your settings and reboot the device to
enable network boot options in other parts of the BIOS.

To change boot device order, enter the Boot menu. Select "Boot Device
Priority" and press enter. The boot device priority menu is shown.

Use the + and - keys to change the boot order. To change the priority of
a USB device, the USB device must be plugged in when the device boots.
To change the priority of a network device, PXE booting must be enabled
in the Advanced menu. To return to the Boot menu, press escape.

If the Boot Device Priority menu doesn't list a plugged-in USB disk,
return to the Boot menu. Select "Hard Disk Drives" and press enter. The
list of hard disk drives, including USB disks, is shown.

Use the + and - keys to put the desired boot disk in the first position,
then press escape to return to the Boot menu.

Changing boot options

To enable PXE network booting, enter the Advanced menu. Change the "LAN
PXE Boot" option to LAN1. Save your settings and reboot the device to
enable network boot options in other parts of the BIOS.

To change boot device order, enter the Boot menu. The following menu is
shown:

Under Boot Option Priorities, highlight the "Boot Option #1" option. Use
the up and down keys to select the primary boot device, then press
enter. To change the priority of a USB device, the USB device must be
plugged in when the device boots.

To change boot device order, enter the Boot menu. Select "Boot Device
Priority" and press enter. The boot device priority menu is shown.

Use the + and - keys to change the boot order. To change the priority of
a USB device, the USB device must be plugged in when the device boots.
To change the priority of a network device, PXE booting must be enabled
in the Advanced menu. To return to the Boot menu, press escape.

press enter, then select either Disabled or the name of the Ethernet
interface on which to perform PXE booting. Save your settings and reboot
the device to enable network boot options in other parts of the BIOS.

To change boot device order, enter the Boot menu. The following menu is
shown:

Under Boot Option Priorities, highlight the "Boot Option #1" option. Use
the up and down keys to select the primary boot device, then press
enter. To change the priority of a USB device, the USB device must be

To enable PXE network booting, enter the Advanced menu. Change the "PXE
Function" option to "Enable LAN1" or a different port. Save your
settings and reboot the device to enable network boot options in other
parts of the BIOS.

To change boot device order, enter the Boot menu. The following menu is

PC Engines Alix 2D13
---------------------

Default serial settings: 38400-8-N-1
Serial cable type: null modem

BIOS access

This device doesn't have a typical BIOS interface. It has a very basic
menu with options for changing serial settings. To access the menu,
press the "s" key as soon as the system begins to boot. The following
menu is shown:

Enabled features are indicated with asterisks instead of brackets in
their menu option.

To save the settings and quit, press "q", then "y" to save your changes.
The Alix will reboot.

Changing serial settings

To change serial settings, press the number key indicated in the menu.
For example, to select the speed 19200, press the 2 key.

Changing boot options
++++++++++++++++++++++

To enable or disable PXE booting, press the "e" key. The Alix boots only
from the network or from the Compact Flash disk, not from USB. It boots
from eth0, the Ethernet interface closest to the USB ports.

PC Engines APU 1C
------------------

Default serial console settings: 115200-8-N-1
Serial cable type: null modem

This device does not have a typical BIOS interface. The boot device menu
can be brought up by pressing the F12 key.

There does not seem to be a way to change the serial speed on PC Engines
APU devices from the default of 115200-8-N-1.

Changing boot options

To change default boot settings, press F12 when prompted. Then type the
number for the "Payload [sortbootorder]" item. A menu such as the one
below is shown:

Then type the letter of the device you want to move to the top of the
list. For example, to promote the mSATA device to the first boot device,
press "d", then "E" to exit the menu.

Unlike the Alix, the APU is able to boot from USB, and its eth0
interface is nearest the console port.
