Management server

The management server is the central location for all configuration and monitoring for the Bonded Internet environment. It is used by administrators for adding, editing, and monitoring bonds, and by aggregators, bonders, and private WAN routers for accessing their configuration and submitting status information. No customer traffic passes through the management server. Communication to the management server is encrypted with SSL, SSH, or other equivalent protocols.

This server hosts the following services:

  • Web server used by administrators, end users, and nodes for initial configuration downloads
  • VPN server to secure communication between the management server and nodes
  • SSH server
  • Configuration management application to control generic configuration on nodes
  • Aggregation server monitoring application

The management server also hosts a few backend services, including multiple database applications, a task queue for long-running jobs, and an optional outgoing email service.

Management servers can run as bare metal or as virtual hosts using VMWare, Xen, etc. They are frequently hosted in the same datacentre as the aggregators, but this is not necessary—in fact, the management server can be hosted anywhere, including in cloud hosting environments.
